Harris And Maher

Two relatively famous white guys got together on television after the recent trial of Dylann Roof, and just after a terrorist attack in Quebec City. In the former case, Roof gunned down innocent church goers in America, and in the latter case Bissonnette gunned down innocent members of a mosque…

Peculiar Phrases Like 1984

The fact that the Orwell book 1984 has become a bestseller on Amazon as of late is interesting and not surprising. However, the book was just as relevant during the election process and the hysteria concerning Russia. Back then, beliefs that had a foundation of “moderate confidence” were promoted as…

The parallel between false beliefs and fake news.

Internally, people go through an identical process when they hold false beliefs compared to changes in headlines when they go through the editing process. The media has recently reported that the Russians hacked a Vermont power grid and the headlines reflected that. Then the headlines were changed to reflect the…

Normalization

Sure, it sounds like a very good idea to be careful about normalizing what Trump does, but it might be instructive to remember what was normalized as Obama became president. Basically, it was a normalization of bailing out an entire failed capitalist system with billions of taxpayer money. It was a normalization of the frequent use of the espionage act. It was the normalization of “kill lists” and the use of drones. It was the normalization of “looking forward” and not prosecuting those responsible for torture. It was the normalization of not doing squat about the fraudulent banks. The list could go on and on.

The last time I read, or rather re-read a book by Naomi Klein, I was enjoying one of the first hot days of summer by a lake. Unfortunately, the day ended rather poorly, or you could even say shocking, when I had to be rushed to the hospital for a heart condition. When I finally went home ten days later, it seemed as if the world had changed as I first heard about Edward Snowden. I’m pretty sure I was unconscious when that story first broke and it took a couple days to figure out what the heck was going on.

On Sam Harris and Free Will

This is a response to Sam Harris after watching a few videos of his presentations. I should note that I am late in discovering the work of Sam so please forgive me if I go over stuff that he did in the past. He claims that, in a way our…

Tree in the forest argument

Most people are familiar with the old philosophical example about the tree falling in the forest and whether it makes a sound if no one is around to witness it. The human idea that something doesn’t exist if a human isn’t around to witness, or detect it, is wrong. However, the question becomes the following: How did you know about the tree in the first place? You didn’t. It’s a manufactured example that exists solely in your head — just like the scientific example of traveling faster than the speed of light and coming back to earth, where everybody has aged disproportionately. Presupposing that you have knowledge about a tree falling in a forest, while at the same time, questioning whether it made a sound, doesn’t even make sense. Hypothetical examples exist in the imagination.
